Shaving Tips & Products for a Great Shave

Products and Tips for a Great Shave

Most men find a shaving system that fits within their lifestyle and just stick with it without much further
shaving, tools, shaving tools, shaving tips, life of a razor blade thought at all.  If you’re someone suffering from nicks, cuts, razor burn, or razor bumps, it’s time for a change.  Or perhaps you’re just looking for a shaving regimen that feels good and is more natural.
If your face feels dry or maybe irritated after shaving then you need to look for shaving lotions, creams and muds that are made with natural ingredients that moisturize while providing a smooth shave.  Probably the best tip for a great shave is to do it immediately after a warm shower while the skin is still wet.  Maybe wet a washcloth with warm water and lay across your face for about 30 seconds.  Apply pre-shaving oil several minutes before shaving, the oil helps moisturize skin and soften beard hairs.  Then, using a badger hair shaving brush which assists to exfoliate and soften the hairs further, apply the shaving mud or cream in a circular motion.  You don’t need a lot of mud or cream, just enough to moisten the skin.  You certainly don’t need the half inch thickness of product like shown in commercials.  Remember, a little goes a long way.

So what are key factors in providing a smooth shave and skin:

  • For razor bumps, which are caused by ingrown hairs, natural shaving products will be less irritating to the skin and help in reducing the onset of razor bumps.
  • Skip those multi-blade brands that promise the closest possible shave.  Invest in a good quality razor and blades.  Take your time and do a few minutes of research.  The time and money are well spent as you’ll get a really great shave.
  • Shave in the direction that hairs grow, not against the grain, which can cause more irritation. Some razors come with a built-in moisturizing strip, and many men swear by them. The best bet is to use an aftershave lotion to soothe facial skin and then apply a moisturizer.
Astringents for Men
Aftershave lotions and toners contain astringents that tighten the skin, narrowing the pores and creating a firmer skin barrier. Witch hazel is an inexpensive solution that can be used to take the puffiness out of lower eyelids.  A little tip:  keep cotton swabs soaked in witch hazel in the refrigerator for a quick application when needed.
Avoid toners and astringents that contain alcohol, which causes dryness.
